The Sulfur Cube is not an ordinary slime mob in Minecraft; it is a being with various physical properties. The main thing that sets this mob apart from others is the new archetype system. The Sulfur Cube behaves differently depending on the block it absorbs. This mob moves like a dynamic object when it consumes blocks, adds more bounce, reduces friction, and affects air drag. Now, let's take a look at all the Sulfur Cube archetypes in Minecraft and their effects on the mob.

Author's Note: The functioning of the Sulfur Cube and its archetypes is based on Minecraft snapshot 26.2. Archetypes and their functionalities may change upon release, so be sure to check back for the latest updates.

What are the Sulfur Cube Archetypes in Minecraft?

Before the Minecraft Chaos Cube update is released, it is important to understand what an archetype means when talking about Sulfur Cubes. An archetype is a physics preset applied when the mob absorbs a specific block.

Archetypes determine how fast the cube will move when hit, the amount of bounce, whether it can float on water, and more. Additionally, there are two types of archetypes: standard and special. Currently, at the time of writing, there are three special archetypes in Minecraft 26.2.

Review of Minecraft Sulfur Cube Archetypes

As mentioned above, each Sulfur Cube archetype has its own unique feature in Minecraft. Here is a complete review of each archetype, the blocks the mob needs to consume, the exhibited features, and more:

Normal Archetype

Image Source: Minecraft/Mojang (Screenshot by Bipradeep Biswas/Beebom)
  • Speed: Medium
  • Bounce: Medium
  • Surface Friction: Medium
  • Air Drag: Low
  • Blocks: All stone and mineral blocks

The normal archetype is the most common behavior you will encounter when the Sulfur Cube consumes a block in the game. This activates when the mob absorbs blocks that are not listed under other archetypes, particularly stone and mineral-based blocks.

In this case, the cube offers a balanced mix in terms of speed, jumping, and friction, making it easy to predict and control. It is neither too fast nor too slow and can float in liquids, making it useful in water-based setups.

Bouncing Archetype

Image Source: Minecraft/Mojang (Screenshot by Bipradeep Biswas/Beebom)
  • Speed: Fast
  • Jumping: High
  • Surface Friction: Medium
  • Air Drag: Low
  • Blocks: Wood, Bamboo Mosaic, Logs, Stripped Logs, Planks, Stripped Wood, Bamboo Block, Stripped Bamboo Block, Honey Block (BE), Honey Bricks (BE), and Carved Honey Bricks (BE)

When you feed the Sulfur Cube with wooden blocks like logs, planks, stripped wood blocks, or bamboo, it gains the Bouncing archetype. This is where the fun begins. The Sulfur slime cube becomes extremely elastic and can bounce aggressively off surfaces, moving at high speeds.

The Sulfur Cube almost becomes like a rubber ball, and you can even create your own pinball mini-game in Minecraft. Additionally, it can float on the water's surface without sinking immediately. You can use this mob in some of the best redstone builds in Minecraft.

Slow Flat Archetype

Image Source: Minecraft/Mojang (Screenshot by Bipradeep Biswas/Beebom)
  • Speed: Slow
  • Jumping: Low
  • Surface Friction: Medium
  • Air Drag: Medium
  • Blocks: Iron Block, Gold Block, Raw Copper Block, Raw Gold Block, Raw Iron Block, Gold Ore, Nether Gold Ore, Iron Ore, Copper Ore, Netherite Block, Ancient Debris (JE), Copper Block, Copper Lantern, Cut Copper, and Waxed Copper

When Sulfur Cubes consume metal blocks like iron, gold (see Minecraft gold level), or copper, they gain the Slow Flat archetype. Instead of bouncing, the cube sits heavily on the ground. It moves slowly and covers short distances when pushed.

Additionally, Slow Flat cubes sink completely in water, highlighting their weight and density. This is ideal for Minecraft builds where you want to create barriers using a block.

Fast Flat Archetype

Image Source: Minecraft/Mojang (Screenshot by Bipradeep Biswas/Beebom)
  • Speed: Fast
  • Jumping: Low
  • Surface Friction: Medium
  • Air Drag: Low
  • Blocks: Coral Blocks, Dead Coral Blocks, Sponge, Wet Sponge, Dried Kelp Block, Moss Block, Withered Moss Block, Honey Block (JE), Honey Bricks (JE), Carved Honey Bricks (JE), Pumpkin, Watermelon, Hay Bale, Carved Pumpkin, Jack o’Lantern (JE), Frog Lights, Slime Block (BE), Honey Block (BE), and Sculk (BE)

Organic blocks essentially contain food sources in Minecraft, such as pumpkins, watermelons, coral, and moss blocks, dried kelp. When the Sulfur Cube consumes these blocks, it gains the Fast Flat archetype. This variant establishes a balance between speed and control but differs from the Normal archetype.

With this archetype, the Sulfur Cube moves quickly but with low jumping. So instead of bouncing everywhere, it tends to slide over surfaces, making it perfect for a controlled Minecraft farm where you know where the Sulfur Slime will stop.

Light Archetype

  • Speed: Slow
  • Jumping: High
  • Surface Friction: Medium
  • Air Drag: High
  • Blocks: Wool

The Sulfur Cube shows the Light archetype when it consumes any Minecraft wool block. This offers a completely different experience compared to other block types. This Sulfur Cube archetype moves with low gravity and high air drag. The mob not only jumps but also hovers in the air.

Thanks to its swimming ability, it performs well in environments where vertical movement is important. Sulfur Cubes with this feature can be used to create disappearing platforms in Minecraft parkour maps.

Fast Sliding Archetype

Image Source: Minecraft/Mojang (Screenshot by Bipradeep Biswas/Beebom)
  • Speed: Fast
  • Jumping: No
  • Surface Friction: Low
  • Air Drag: Low
  • Blocks: Blue Ice, Packed Ice, Snow Block, and Ice (BE)

When it absorbs ice-based blocks, such as packed ice or snow blocks, the Sulfur Cube can transform into the Fast Sliding archetype. Here, friction, or rather its absence, becomes a determining factor for the cube. The mob slides quickly on the surface because friction is minimal in this case.

Fast Sliding Sulfur Cubes rarely jump and can cover more distance as they gain speed. This is useful for creating curling mini-games and hosting tournaments with your friends.

Slow Sliding Archetype

Image Source: Minecraft/Mojang (Screenshot by Bipradeep Biswas/Beebom)
  • Speed: Slow
  • Jumping: No
  • Surface Friction: Low
  • Air Drag: Low
  • Blocks: Brown Mushroom Block, Red Mushroom Block, Mushroom Stem, Mycelium, Nether Wart Block, Warped Wart Block, and Shroomlight

The Slow Sliding archetype is applied when Sulfur Cube mobs consume blocks related to mushrooms and fungus. These include red mushrooms, brown mushrooms, stems, or even mycelium blocks. Unlike the fast version, this one slides slowly and moves with minimal jumping.

Since it slides without gaining excessive speed, it is ideal for redstone setups that require highly manageable and predictable movement. Therefore, you can use Slow Sliding cubes in setups that require predictable sliding mechanics. Additionally, since this block can sink in water, it indicates that it is heavy.

High Resistance Archetype

Image Source: Minecraft/Mojang (Screenshot by Bipradeep Biswas/Beebom)
  • Speed: Very Slow
  • Jumping: Low
  • Surface Friction: High
  • Air Drag: Low
  • Blocks: Soul Sand and Soul Soil

Soul Sand and Soul Soil blocks give the Sulfur Cubes the special High Resistance archetype. In this case, the mobs become extremely difficult to move, hardly jump, show high friction, and resist most knockback.

This is perfect for situations where you want the Sulfur Cube to remain stationary, acting almost like a solid object. Additionally, it can sink in water, further emphasizing its density.

Sticky Archetype

Image Source: Minecraft/Mojang (Screenshot by Bipradeep Biswas/Beebom)
  • Speed: Medium
  • Jumping: No
  • Surface Friction: High
  • Air Drag: Low
  • Blocks: Honeycomb Block

The Sticky archetype is the most distinctive special archetype of the Sulfur Cube and is triggered when it absorbs the honeycomb block in Minecraft. Instead of jumping or sliding, the cube sticks tightly to surfaces, with extremely high friction and zero jumping.

This sticky feature makes this Sulfur Cube block ideal for places in your structures where you want everything to stay in position and creates hidden covers to store your valuable diamonds in Minecraft.

Explosive Archetype

Image Source: Minecraft/Mojang (Screenshot by Bipradeep Biswas/Beebom)
  • Speed: Medium
  • Jumping: Medium
  • Surface Friction: Medium
  • Air Drag: Medium
  • Blocks: TNT Block

When the Sulfur Cube consumes a Minecraft TNT block, it inherits all explosive properties. In this way, when you interact with a mob with fire, when you ignite it with fire, when you hold it near an explosion, or when you use a Redstone signal next to it, the TNT block enters a triggered state.

A Sulfur Cube with an explosive archetype has a 6-second fuse time when manually ignited using fire or Redstone. The fuse time randomly varies between 0.75 seconds and 3 seconds when the cube is exposed to another explosion.

As of writing, these are all the existing Sulfur Cube archetypes in Minecraft. Developers are testing the upcoming Minecraft 26.2 update and adding new archetypes based on player feedback.
