The masters of post-apocalyptic first-person shooter games, 4A Games, have announced the latest and darkest installment of the beloved series, Metro 2039. Set in the frozen and radiation-affected remnants of Moscow, this new game will introduce new characters, mutants, and even a Neo-Nazi faction to the series' storyline. It also promises to be the "most shocking Metro adventure" yet, making it clear that the developers are not holding back. If you are eagerly anticipating this game, here’s what we know so far.

Metro 2039 Release Date and Platforms

Metro 2039 is set to be released in Winter 2026. The developers have not yet provided a specific release date, but this window makes it one of the most anticipated games of 2026. In terms of platforms, the game will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store).

It is quite bold of 4A and Deep Silver to consider releasing the game this winter. Large and small publishers are eager to avoid the seismic launch of GTA 6 by steering clear of the Q4 period. A Winter 2026 release could mean only November or December, and you can imagine that consumer attention during those two months will be dominated by Rockstar's game.

Metro 2039 Price and Editions

The price of Metro 2039 has not yet been confirmed, but it is expected that the base version of the game will likely be $69.99. In terms of editions, 4A is likely to offer three different versions - Standard Edition, Gold Edition, and Collector's Edition. Please note that this is speculative at this point, and we will update this section as new details emerge.

Metro 2039 Story Details

Metro 2039 begins six years after the events of Metro Exodus. The events take place in a post-apocalyptic version of Russia, destroyed by nuclear bombs during World War II. All human survivors have been forced to retreat into the dark and filthy metro lines, where they have established a civilization that reflects the old world.

As shown throughout the Metro trilogy, humanity has quickly reverted to its primal instincts and formed factions with competing political ideologies. This, of course, led to war, and in Metro 2039, we will learn about the winning faction - the Novoreich regime.

The name paints a rather clear picture. Novoreich is a fascist regime that has managed to dominate the metro through propaganda and fear. This faction, led by an ex-Spartan known as Hunter, aims to wage war against a "dark and terrifying enemy" on the surface.

You will play as the franchise's first voiced main character, known only as the Outsider. A lonely figure struggling with violent nightmares, the Outsider is forced to return to the Metro, which he once swore never to return to. In the trailer, we see hints of his past, and there is a potential connection to the Dark Ones. These psychic entities appear to have a hold on the Outsider's mind and will certainly play a central role in the story.

Metro 2039 Gameplay Details

Metro 2039 is a first-person survival horror shooter, like its predecessors and the STALKER games. Both the surface world and the metro are harsh and miserable places where resources are scarce. This is reflected in the gameplay; you will have very limited ammunition, crafting resources, and medical syringes. You will need to manage these three resources carefully while also keeping an eye on your radiation levels and ensuring your flashlight is always charged.

We are pleased to report that the diegetic user interface from Metro Exodus will return in Metro 2039. Instead of bars or indicators on the screen, all essential information is conveyed through in-game elements, such as the Outsider's watch or the Geiger counter strapped to his wrist. Familiar weapons from the series are expected to return, including the classic Kalash, a messy Shambler, and an SMG resembling the Bastard.

Finally, it has been confirmed that the game will feature new enemy types, though there is no information on what kinds of horrors we will see. However, the trailer confirmed that the Nosalises (mutated underground rats) will be returning.

Metro 2039 Trailer

The only Metro 2039 trailer released so far is a six-minute promotional trailer. It is filled with cinematics that provide a glimpse into the Outsider's mental turmoil and Novoreich. There is also an Xbox First Look segment dedicated to Metro 2039, which does not feature new footage but offers insights from the developers.

And that’s everything you need to know about Metro 2039 so far. We will regularly update this article, so be sure to check back. Also, let us know in the comments if you are looking forward to the game.
