In recent months, the gaming community has been trying to protect their wallets against rising subscription fees and has been wondering whether the phrase "best value in gaming" is losing its worth. Today, Microsoft announced significant price reductions for Xbox Game Pass tiers. However, the Xbox Game Pass price cut comes with a heavy sacrifice, and Call of Duty fans are not going to like it. Here’s everything you need to know.
There’s a Condition for Call of Duty as Xbox Game Pass Prices Drop
According to the new Game Pass strategy, future Call of Duty games will no longer be available on the service on launch day. This change, led by new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, addresses subscribers' reactions to rising costs. According to the new Xbox strategy, the Game Pass prices are as follows:
- Xbox Game Pass Ultimate: Drops from $29.99 per month to $22.99.
- PC Game Pass: Drops from $16.49 per month to $13.99.
Under this model, upcoming Call of Duty releases will not be available on Xbox Game Pass on launch day. Instead, Microsoft has confirmed that new games will be added to the subscription tiers in the next holiday season. This means you will be able to play a CoD game with a one-year delay, otherwise, you will need to purchase the game. The Call of Duty games available in the Xbox Game Pass library will remain accessible to all members.
This price revision seems to be the first major step in Xbox CEO Asha Sharma's broader roadmap leading up to the launch of Project Helix. By stabilizing the profitability of the subscription model now, Xbox is laying a sustainable financial foundation for the anticipated console-PC hybrid ecosystem.
When Xbox raised prices last October, it sparked widespread subscriber backlash with the addition of Call of Duty to the day-one list. Returning to a traditional retail release window for Call of Duty makes undeniable financial sense for Microsoft.
As an independent game available on almost all platforms, Call of Duty has a better chance of making more money with a price of $69.99+. Launching it on day one in a subscription service actively reduces those guaranteed premium sales.
