It seems that Microsoft aims to reduce the entry barrier to the gaming ecosystem. Leaked information about a new collaboration with Discord points to a special Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition plan. This new tier was previously brought up by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma with the goal of combining social connectivity with a specific game library at a more accessible price.

Leaks Suggest Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition Plan May Be Included with Discord Nitro Subscriptions

The leak regarding the Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition comes after the recent restructuring. This restructuring made the Ultimate Tier cheaper and controversially coincided with the removal of day-one access to Call of Duty.

According to leaked information, Discord Nitro subscribers will gain free access to the Game Pass Starter Edition, thus having two major subscriptions for a price. Based on the information that has emerged so far, the Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition plan could serve as an entry point for players focused on social gaming rather than a larger game library.

According to the leaked information, the package may include:

  • Access to over 50 high-quality games, including fan favorites like Stardew Valley and Fallout 4.
  • 10 hours of cloud gaming streaming per month, allowing for gaming on mobile devices or low-spec PCs.
  • The ability to stream certain games that the user already owns in their personal Xbox library.

This leaked partnership could be a direct response to the “à la carte” trend in digital subscriptions. By combining Xbox Game Pass with Discord Nitro subscriptions, Microsoft seems to foresee that social benefits are as valuable as the games themselves.

The proposed Discord Nitro x Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition may target new users, but existing Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers could also see an upgrade. Reports suggest that Ultimate subscribers could have permanent Discord Nitro benefits along with the current additions.

Considering that games like Forza Horizon 6 and Halo: Campaign Evolved are on the horizon, offering a low-cost Starter route could help Microsoft remain competitive against Sony's PlayStation Plus. Microsoft and Discord have yet to officially announce the Starter Edition, but the idea of a more budget-friendly way to access Xbox Game Pass is certainly an exciting possibility for gamers.
